Hey all I just wanted to get some feed back from the community on this. I recently took part in the GW2 beta weekend and have kinda become obsessed with it. I have never played Guild Wars and am seriously considering buying it now just to get my fix. Now my question is do you guys think, at this point, it would be worth the $50 dollar investment for the trilogy pack + eye of the north? I know the two games are very different gameplay-wise but I'm more interested in the world and the story, not to mention this whole hall of monuments thing I've been hearing about being tied to your GW2 account. Anyways what are your thoughts? Am I too late? Would I be rejected by the community as a bandwagoner? Is it a good idea? Let me know, and thanks.

Okay firsts first

most guilds tend to be friendly and indulgent with newbies.

You are not too late. You can still get 30/50. Maybe if you adapt well even more.

Now be careful buying gw1 is a good onvestment in my opinion HOWEVER it is very different from gw2. Not worse....just different.

If you are buying the original game just to hope for an experience like Guild Wars 2, unfortunately you won't be able to find that here. Like mentioned before, they are very different games.
If you are buying to attempt to get 30/50 on HOM, it is possible if you are a good learner. At it's current state, I feel that GW isn't exactly the most newb-friendly simply because most players are those that have played for 5+ years. You better hope you get a good guild to help you out, and some helpful players with time.

If you are playing it for the story and role-playing perspective, GET IT.

Yeah not exactly looking for a "Guild Wars 2 experience" mainly my goal is to immerse myself into the world maybe learn more about the history and lore, and hopefully have some fun along the way. Also to update I started a trial account played it for a little over an hour and just decided to purchase so yea, there it is I am pretty excited. Thanks for the responses.

The rest of your questions have pretty much already been awnsered. That being said make sure you get Nightfall. There are still helpfull players around, but you wont always find them. Nightfall gives you heroes(basically computer chars you can customize) They will help you out tenfold for when you have to run by yourself

Also, get ahold of someone from High by Nine [Bong]. I rarely find myself in PvE guilds, but [bong] was by far the most helpful and laid back group of people i have had the pleasure of playing with. They'll help you get started, get your 30/50, or just give u tips and pointers on how to figure s**t out on your own. Whatever i needed, someone from [Bong] was there.

Get Guild Wars if you really want to play Guild Wars. Not worth all the massive amount of time to get 30/50 or 50/50 for something you don't enjoy or because you want to play a different game (Guild Wars 2).

I think the last post, regarding "Complete Edition,' is the best advice. Also, my in-game name is "Edgar The Archmage." Once your account is set up, press [N] on your keyboard, and it'll bring up the Friends' List. Click in the box where it says "Click here to add a friend,' and type my character name in. Check your friends' list periodically, and whenever you see me online, double-click my name to send me a private message. I can help you with any part in the game, even bring you places where you can jump-start your leveling so you don't spend precious time grinding away just to get to level 20. Cheers!

yes i strongly recommend getting it even if you dont achieve the 30pts or so you at least get some rewards anyway.
besides the campaign is great and you will learn about the storyline and generally the guild wars world.

Trilogy != Complete Collection.

The one you get from Steam comes with Prophecies, Faction and Nightfall.

As you said GW1 and GW2 play very diffrent. Even so a thing that does make a comeback is the great story telling.
Guild Wars 1, namely prophecies has a great story arc, (dis)likeable characters and many hours worth of quests and missions.
The communitie overall is laidback and understandig, you could say a little bit more mature than your avarage MMO. (even though GW1 isn't really a MMO)

I myself have played the game for many hours (+2000) and i'm still logging in on a regulair basis.

For the hall of moduments or HoM, it gives some really good looking extra's in GW2. And is a great way to track your progress.

Overall I really think you should GW1 a chance, especially since it is a Buy to Play game.

Uh, you can also try GW1 before you buy it, so that's probably the best thing to do if you're buying GW1 off the back of GW2... since they are very different.

It will be nice to see gw1 and see how the world has changed when you finally login to Gw2. Nice to visit temple of ages and see them again in GW2. aatxes and Underworld references and many more things like that.
Gameplay wise, what so many before me said, it is nothing like GW2.

So far I am a level 5 Derv and having fun, this game is very different from anything I've played in the past so its kind of a nice change. Along with the 3 pack I also bought Eye of the North so hopefully I will be able to figure out how to get going with my HoM in time for GW2.

eotn is an expansion, so it will not show up as an alternative when you create a character. Instead you will be able to take a quest once you've reached lvl 10 that will start your eotn storyline. Since you're in NF it's this quest: http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Hole_of_Istan

Then you'll have to reach the outpost called eye of the north, (very early in the campaign) then you'll be able to access your hall of monuments. You'll have to place tapestries in your hom in order to place trophies in the respective monument. Tapestries are earned through the eotn storyline.

Vouch. 30/50 takes a lot of time, especially if you are starting from scratch. Play for fun if you enjoy the game.

I came back for HoM and found myself resentful of the time investment it required so I stopped at 15/30 (I wanted the Moa pet for my Ranger main).
